The Samaria gorge

A private tour with a mountain guide to the famous Samaria gorge. A classic hiking route for nature lovers. The gorge is located in the southwest of the island, in the province of Chania, between the White Mountains.

Being the longest gorge in Europe, 18 kms, it usually takes 7 hours to go through it. The trek is impressive, descending, easy and clearly marked, but as it is quite long, so good shape is required as well as an experience in long walking.

Your mountain guide will meet you at your preferred location within the Chania town region. The departure is done quite early, before 7 a.m. and it takes an hour to reach the Omalοs plateau where the trail begins. Optional stop for breakfast or coffee at the beginning of the gorge.

While descending the gorge you will receive extra personalized attention by your mountain guide who will give you information about the history of the area, the flora and fauna. There is plenty of time to take it easy, stop to rest, take pictures, eat snacks, etc.

The trail ends at Agia Roumeli where you can swim, rest and have lunch in one of the local tavernas. The ferry  departs at 5:30 pm to Sfakia where your private transfer will be  waiting to take you back to Chania. Arrival around 8pm.

PLEASE NOTE: As this tour involves walking through a gorge, trekking shoes are recommended as well as light clothing, please do not forget your towel, swimming suit, sunglasses and sun hat. We suggest only to carry 1 bottle of water, as you can fill it up in different points of the gorge.
